555 timer is a highly popular IC introduced in the 70's and still being mass produced today. It is commonly found in many different electronic circuits. With some other external components, a 555 timer can provide a stable rectangular waveform with adjustable pulse width. Therefore, it can be used as a timer to provide time delays and also as an oscillator.
There are many projects that you can do with a 555 timer. A first year electronic student will probably recognize this as among the first IC that they used to do beginner projects such as blinking LEDs, play sound with a speaker and motor speed controller.
