This is the upgraded v2 version on Pi NoIR camera. It uses a high quality 8 megapixel Sony IMX219 image sensor. The camera can capture 3280 x 2464 pixel static images and also supports 1080p30, 720p60 and 640x480p60/90 video.
The human eyes cannot see infrared light. For this reason, most camera has a filter to exclude them. This is an infrared version of the official Raspberry Pi camera module. It is identical with the regular camera module except it has no InfraRed (IR) filter (hence, NoIR), which makes it great for low light photography and taking infrared photos - something that photography enthusiasts would appreciate. Infrared spectrum brings out details that would normally hidden if the scene was shot in normal color.
Other than the artistic effects, IR photography is also common in many scientific application used by doctors, astronomers and botanists. Another application of this camera is a night-time camera; observing nocturnal animals for example. You can use a few IR LEDs to illuminate the surrounding which can be picked up by the camera but invisible to the wildlife that you are observing.
The camera is mounted on a black PCB as opposed to the green board of the normal cam. It comes with a flexible flat cable which is to be plugged directly to the Camera Serial Interface (the one nearer to the ethernet port) of the Pi.
This camera is supported in the latest version of Raspbian, the preferred OS for Raspberry Pi. It can use the same applications provided for the regular camera. So, you can use any code for the regular camera out there with this module. Just that you'll get IR photos instead.
A 150mm flex cable is included in the package. Looking for a longer or shorter flex cable? You can now grab the replacement flex cable in our store.
This product is compatible with all Raspberry Pi models. It is also suitable for ASUS Tinker Board and Jetson Nano.
