Software Defined Radio (SDR) is a system where software implementation plays a major role replacing the typical hardware implementation in radio communication. The ubiquity of personal computer and embedded system make it practical to implement SDR especially for hobbyists and enthusiasts.
This SDR USB dongle uses RTL2832U controller and R820T2 tuner to receive signals from 48.25MHz to 863.25MHz. It can be plugged to a computer (Windows/Linux/Mac) and with appropriate software, you can tune in to TV, FM radio and other unencrypted radio signals.
You can also use this dongle as a flight tracker listening to ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast) signals. With a small computer like a Raspberry Pi and an internet connection, you can build a ADS-B ground station and submit data to independent air traffic services such as Flight Aware and FlightRadar24. With a USB-OTG cable, you can also use this dongle with your Android tablet/mobile phone with plenty of ADS-B apps available.
Also included, a small antenna with a cable approximately 1 meter long that you can plug to a connector on the dongle. Some signals require line-of-sight to the sky with no obstruction. So, it is a good idea to place the antenna on the rooftop or at a balcony for a better reception.
