A potentiometer is a variable resistive element that can be used as a user interface to control electrical devices such as light dimmer or volume control on audio equipment.
This potentiometer has a shaft that you can turn to change the resistance. It comes with a nut and washer, good for panel mount. A removable knob is included that you can slip on the shaft to give a good grip when turning it and making it more presentable when mounted. The good thing is, you can also plug it on a breadboard for prototyping.
This is a standard single turn, linear taper potentiometer with three terminals. The shaft can be turned up to 300°. The resistance is rated up to 10K Ohm. There are two ways of connecting it. The first method is known as "Voltage divider". Connect +V and GND to the outer pins. The middle pin will output a voltage between 0 and +V, changing when you turn the knob. The second method is to get a variable resistor. Connect one of the outer pin (either one) and the middle pin to your circuit and you will get a resistor with the resistance value from 0 to 10k Ohm when you turn the knob.
