
A reed switch is a type of switch that is actuated by an applied magnetic field. It has a pair of contact in a sealed glass. This reed switch is normally open and when a magnetic field is present, the contact closed.
Among the typical usage of reed switch is as door and window sensor in burglar alarm system. It can also be found in smartphones, tablets or laptops to turn off the screen when the casing/lid is closed.
