Pins on development board like the Raspberry Pi or Arduino cannot handle high current loads such as LED strip, DC motor or water pump. In order to do that, you can use a MOSFET such as IRF520.
This IRF520 breakout board allows your Raspberry Pi, Arduino or any other 3-5V development board to control DC devices up to 24V and ~5A current. If you plan to drive anything higher than 3A, a heatsink is recommended (not included). On the board, there are screw terminals that you can use to connect to your load (V+, V-) and to the external power source to power the load (VIN, GND). On the opposite side from the screw terminal, there are 3-pin header. The SIG and GND header can be connected to your board and the VCC can be left unconnected.
When the SIG pin is HIGH, the LED indicator on board lights up and power is supplied to the output.
