A Real Time Clock (RTC) is used to keep time as accurate as possible even when your system is powered off. DS3231 is an extremely accurate RTC chip. It is relatively more accurate than other RTC chips such as DS1307.
This RTC module can be used with any controller with I2C interface. There is a 6-pin header for connection to this module. At the back, there is a removable coin battery holder. The battery keeps the time value when the module is not powered. It requires a CR2032 which is included. You can also cascade other I2C module to this board by connecting it to the 4-pin I2C solder pads.
This module can adapt itself to 3.3v or 5v systems without external level shifter. This means you can also use it for Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone Black, Arduino and other microcontroller with I2C interface.
